Susan-Jane (known as “S-J”) is the partner leading the Employment team. She specialises in employment law, education law and workplace health and safety.
S-J graduated from Auckland University with a BA/LLB. She obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Employment Law from Nottingham University. She was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in England and Wales and for 19 years she practiced as a lawyer in London, including two multinational law firms with offices across Western Europe. During that time she acted for global companies in the manufacturing and entertainment sectors in the employment law aspects of large scale mergers and acquisitions, restructuring and transnational issues involving European Works Councils. She also acted for employees including Names and Syndicates in Lloyds of London and discrimination cases in the merchant banking sector. When S-J returned to NZ in 2004, S-J worked in-house within the Business New Zealand and New Zealand Chambers of Commerce families in Wellington as Managing Solicitor leading a large team of employment lawyers and employment relations consultants. She has a high success rate in employment litigation in both NZ and the UK. S-J also enjoys collective bargaining. S-J joined Harkness Henry in September 2014 and became a partner in 2016. Her interests include classic cars, vinyl and playing the drums.
