Resource Management & Employment
Alex is passionate about employment and resource management issues, and works hard with her clients to achieve positive and economical results. Comfortable appearing before hearings and judicial authorities, Alex will work in a proactive manner to reduce costs, whilst managing her client’s risk exposure, regardless of whether they are an employer, employee, applicant or submitter.
Within employment, Alex is an experienced investigator who has carried out a range of investigations including ones relating to sexual and bullying allegations. She is able to guide her clients through what can often be a confusing and challenging landscape, and what type of investigation is required when.
Alex regularly advises and presents on the procedural requirements of disciplinary and performance matters, restructuring, restraints of trade and drafting appropriate terms and conditions of employment, as well as the Holidays Act 2003 including liabilities of employers. As part of this she has liaised with financial executives on implementing new payroll systems. Alex also closely works with the Commercial team on needs arising from the sale of a business (including employee transfer). Personal grievances provide a substantive part of Alex’s workflow, and once again she will provide pragmatic and cost-effective advice.
As a junior to Joan Forret in her resource management practice, Alex has worked on behalf of applicants and submitters to successfully gain and oppose resource consents in the Waikato and Thames Coromandel District. She has particular experience in agricultural issues including abatement notices - particularly relating to effluent management within the Waikato and Matamata Piako Area.
Before joining Harkness Henry, Alex worked exclusively for employers at the Employers and Manufacturing Association, and prior to that as an Associate in the Dispute Resolution Group of a large multi-national law firm based in Dubai on matters relating to employment, shareholders, real estate and construction.
She also gained first hand exposure to commercial negotiation at the highest level, when participating in the Malaysia and ASEAN Free Trade Negotiations while she worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade as a graduate.
Alex holds a bachelor of laws and arts (political science) from the University of Otago and was admitted to the Bar in 2005. She is also a Board of Trustees member for the Waikato Kindergarten Association.
